A Certaldo succede in autunno. Durante Boccaccesca queste dimensioni entrano in contatto. TOGNAZZI TERRITORY | Boccaccesca 2026: Certaldo, seen from the Castello By October, Certaldo has entered a different season. Much of the surrounding countryside has already seen the grape harvest. The pace of summer has eased, the days are getting shorter, and the town is preparing for one of its long-standing autumn appointments. From 8 to 11 October, Boccaccesca returns, bringing food, wine, local produce, craftsmanship and a programme of events to Certaldo Alto and other parts of the town. Boccaccesca began in 1999 and has grown alongside Certaldo through its connection with food, wine, local production and craftsmanship. Its markets, tastings and food events bring producers and visitors into the streets and squares of the historic Castello. People may arrive for a particular dish, a tasting or an event, but in doing so they also spend time in the place that hosts it. The Castello at the centre, Certaldo all around it Certaldo Alto is at the heart of Boccaccesca. But the Castello is only one part of Certaldo. Below its walls is the everyday town: shops, services, businesses and the routines of those who live here. Beyond it lie the surrounding fields, farms and producers that remain part of the local economy. From the Castello itself, the Val d'Elsa opens out across the landscape. During Boccaccesca, these parts of Certaldo come closer together. Products from the surrounding area arrive in the historic centre. Local businesses take part. Residents come up to the Castello, while visitors who may never have been to Certaldo before walk its streets and discover something beyond the event itself. The town has other occasions during the year that create a similar connection in very different ways. Mercantia turns the historic centre into a setting for theatre, performance and craftsmanship. Other events focus on literature and culture. Boccaccesca starts from food and local production. The subject changes; the place remains the common thread. Pinocchio joins the story in 2026 This year's theme adds an unexpected character: “Boccaccesca incanta Pinocchio” — Boccaccesca enchants Pinocchio. The idea connects with the bicentenary of Carlo Lorenzini, better known as Collodi, born in 1826 and the author of The Adventures of Pinocchio. The same anniversary has already been part of Certaldo's cultural programme this year. BurattinINborgo, the summer festival dedicated to puppetry and figure theatre, devoted its 2026 edition to the bicentenary and to Pinocchio. At Boccaccesca, Pinocchio enters a different world. Here, the story meets food, wine, cooking and local production. It is a playful connection, but it also fits the way Certaldo uses culture: not simply to stage events, but to bring people into its historic centre and give them another reason to experience the place. Autumn, after the harvest October comes at an interesting point in the agricultural year. The grape harvest is largely behind us. The countryside begins to change, summer's intensity gives way to a quieter rhythm, and the relationship between the town and the land around it becomes easier to notice. That is the setting in which Boccaccesca takes place. For four days, products, producers, food, craftsmanship and local businesses move into the Castello. Certaldo Alto becomes busy with people who live here, people who work here and visitors arriving from elsewhere. For a few days, the Castello becomes part of the everyday life of the town — with streets to walk, businesses to discover, people to meet and activities taking place around you. Looking beyond the image of a place Certaldo can easily be reduced to an image: the medieval Castello, the views over the Val d'Elsa, the name of Boccaccio. All of these are real. None of them, on its own, explains the place. To understand Certaldo, it helps to look beyond the postcard: where people live and work, which services remain active throughout the year, how the countryside connects with the town, and how easily other parts of the Val d'Elsa can be reached. For someone arriving from abroad and considering Certaldo as a place to live, or as a property location, these details matter. A house does not exist in isolation. Its setting is not simply a view from a window or the characteristics of the building itself. What surrounds it matters too: the services, the businesses, the people, the connections and the life of the town outside the tourist season. That is one reason why an event such as Boccaccesca can reveal something that a short property visit may miss. For four days, Certaldo Alto becomes a meeting point between the historic centre and the wider town, between the countryside and local businesses, and between those who live here and those who have come to discover it. Seen from the Castello, Certaldo becomes easier to read as a whole. And for anyone looking at the area from a residential or property perspective, that distinction matters: it is not only about where a property is, but about the territory it belongs to. |
